A two-time Oscar winner for best director, Lean is best known for his films Great Expectations, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to India. Sir David Lean was born in Surrey, England, on March 25, 1908 to Helena and Francis Lean who were Quakers. He wasn’t an especially good student. However, at age 10, his uncle gave him a Brownie box camera which Lean loved and would spend a great deal of time printing and developing the film.

An early success was romantic drama "A Brief Encounter" (1945) and the Dickens adaptations Great Expectations" (1946) and "Oliver Twist" (1948). David Lean, two-time Oscar-winning director of Lawrence Of Arabia and The Bridge On the River Kwai, had something of a renaissance in the 1980s after a spell in the wilderness (see the then critical drubbing received by Ryan’s Daughter), with both his adaptation of E.M Forster’s A Passage To India, and the restoration of his masterwork, Lawrence. David Lean started his career in films as teaboy at ‘Gaumont-British Studios’, then as a clapboard boy, and became the highest paid editor by the end of the 1930s. In 1938 he worked on ‘Pygmalion’ and in 1941 on ‘One of Our Aircraft is Missing’. David Lean Cinema, Croydon, United Kingdom.

David Lean had left his first wife when Peter was young, just as Lean's own accountant father had left when David was 16. In a BBC documentary, Steven Spielberg recounted how Lean (by then a personal friend) asked him to approach Warner Brothers on his behalf to persuade them to finance his film of Joseph Conrad 's novel Nostromo.
